Dolly The Sheep

1. Dolly - she was a domestic sheep, the first animal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell, using a process called nuclear transfer.
2. The cell used for cloning her was taken from a mammary gland, the production of a clone showed that a cell could recreate a whole individual.
3. She was born on July 5th 1996 and had three mothers.
4. She lived her entire life at Roslin Institute in Edinburgh.
5. On February 14th 2003, she was euthanised because she had progressive lung disease and severe arthritis.
6. Some said that a contributing factor to Dolly's death was that she was born with a genetic age of six years, the age of the sheep she was cloned from.
7. After cloning was successfully speculated through the production of her, many other mammals were cloned, such as pigs, deer, horses and bulls.
8. Cloning is helpful in preserving endangered species and may help to revive extinct species.
9. Because she was the first cloned mammal to be created from an adult cell, her birth was exciting to the scientific world and the public.
10. She was named after the country and western singer Dolly Parton.
