Chapter 1

Nathan: Wake-up Call

Something's wrong with me. And it's not just waking up in a dog crate. Well, there's that, but I mean, something wrong with me. I don't feel right. Well that just came out wrong. Of course I don't feel right. I'm in a frucking dog crate for crying out loud!

The room I'm in is some kind of sick, messed up cross between a dentist's office and an insane asylum. There's a reclined chair with surgical lights hanging over it on the far side of the room and a few doctors/scientists milling about near it.

Lined up near me are five other crates, each with another person, none of them older than 17, sleeping inside.

To my left is a girl with long, honey-blonde hair with brown streaks pulled back into a pony tail. She's wearing a black leather jacket over a long-sleeved pink shirt, dark skinny jeans and combat boots. Despite the current situation, grim as it may be, I can't help but notice how beautiful she is.

Across from her is another girl with shoulder-length black hair, also in a pony tail, a purple t shirt, black jeans and combat boots.

Next to her is a girl with dark brown hair, a gray t shirt, black leggings, a rain coat and tennis shoes.

To my right is another guy with black hair, a white shirt, black jeans and white-gray sneakers.

The last person is a tall, pale, skinny guy with red hair, with jeans, a white shirt, a leather jacket and boots.

"Doctor, subject twelve is awake!" I hear a male voice say, breaking both the silence and my train of thought.

A man with a white lab coat kneels in front of the crate.

"Subject twelve. I remember this one. Surprising that you're the first to wake up. I wouldn't have expected it. The way you fought back, the sedatives we had to give you, I thought you'd be out for another few days."

"I might surprise you." I say.

He laughs.

"Oh, I don't doubt that, twelve. I don't doubt that one bit."

With that, he stands and walks away. My whole body feels lethargic, and just looking around is exhausting, but I'm damned if I fall asleep now.

I don't remember anything before waking up a few minutes ago. My name; I remember that. Nathan. But I can't remember anything beyond that.

I have to find a way to get out of here, wherever here is. But that'll be difficult when even looking around takes the kind of effort that makes me want to fall asleep again. But I won't. Certainly not now. I'll find a way out of here.

Someone walks over and opens the crate. When I try to lash out, the man simply laughs and grabs my arm as I tumble out of the crate like a toy. I feel a sharp prick in my wrist, then multiple arms lifting me and slamming me into the metal chair. The lights snap on, blinding me and I hear a voice, the doctor that talked to me earlier, bellows, "Begin."

I feel an incredible pain erupts, rapidly reaching through my entire body. It feels like someone is stabbing a thousand needles into my arms, legs and chest.

After what feels like an eternity, though it's probably only a few minutes, the pain stops. When I blink away the tears of pain that manifested in my eyes, I see a half dozen doctors standing next to a dozen wicked-looking machines sporting needles, blades and any number of sadistic surgical instrument you could think of.

"Phase two, subject twelve complete. Put him back in the crate and prepare for the next procedure."

I feel someone dragging me back to the crate and toss me in, slamming the door behind me.
