Chapter 1

Sage Vienna: The Arts

" Child, if you want to live you will get back her now! " My Stepfather screamed to me as I darted across the living room. I heard a smash of a bottle beside my head, but ignored it and kept running. " If you take one step over that threshold, you can't ever come back! " Charlie's voice boomed. I flicked him off, screaming " This was my home before it was your home and it will always be my home! "

I ran out into the dark starry night onto the streets of NYC. Late at night, on perfect nights like this, I could pretend that nothing ever happened. The traffic had died down, and I looked up. My mother and father had left when I was young. Anne Vienna had adopted me, but she had passed some years ago. I snuck around the back of the complex and jammed the keys into my motorcycle. It roared to life as I sped off into the night.

I was awakened by a methodic hissing noise. I had gone to bed a few hours earlier, so I wouldn't sleep on the road. I'd set up camp on the outskirts of Buffalo, New York. Now, Gods know I hate snakes, but I had to see what was up. I stole outside of the tent, but saw only darkness. Then another hissing. I spun around to see the outline of a double headed snake, Amphisbaina in Greek Culture.

I ran to the fire, grabbing a stick of the wood, and turned. The Amphisbaina hissed and struck at me. I danced outside of it's reach, then tried again. This time I struck first, scoring a burn on the snake. It hissed again in pain, then struck at me. I squinted and saw a petite green shape appear out of the trees. My friend Laila's voice came from it, as she tossed me a sharp object. I caught it by the handle, and looked over. It sounded like Laila, and looked like her, just green. There were a few hints of flesh colored makeup around her chin.

" Sage, watch out! " Laila yelled at me. I looked over to see nothing. I turned back to her, confused, then felt a burning pain as I screeched. I looked down to see that the giant snake had managed to sink it's fangs into my side.

I batted it off with the dagger Laila gave me, fending it off. FInally, I got a lucky shot when Laila and I both attacked it. I cut through both heads, and Laila sent a bow through it's heart.

My vision started to spin in and out of focus and I dropped the dagger with a clang. " Sage? SAGE! " Laila said, first calm then frantic. I dropped to my knees, " Just a bit tired, L-Laila. " I slurred. Laila lifted me up, whispering to herself in a different language- one I seemed to understand. " Oh no, Oh no! Mr. D is gonna kill me! " Then my vision turned sideways and black and I passed out.
