5 General Steps to Get You Started

Step 1: Research

After you've decided on a goal (or several) you must take some time to research this idea. The easiest way to fail a resolution is by starting without already knowing how you're going to get to the end. If you must, take a week or two at the start of the year to research and plan. Look at your upcoming year to see when you'll most likely be busy or have downtime. How will your schedule affect your resolutions? Look at the details of your goal, what it takes to get it accomplished. Are you aware of all the steps and are willing to follow each of them? Look on the Internet for some information and ask around to see if anyone you know has tried your goal before. Chances are, you'll learn something you didn't know that could change the direction of your resolution, or could get some advice on how to best go about achieving it. Trust me, this step may seem a bit boring, but it is the most important and you will be thankful later.

Step 2: Make a big deal of it

If you've committed yourself thus far, then start making a big deal of your resolutions! Announce to all your friends and family what you're planning to accomplish. Write your goals down and tack them up somewhere noticeable. Push them up on your priorities list and don't be afraid to turn something else down in favor of your resolution. The bigger a deal you make it, the more serious you and those around you will take it. And if you're serious and have some accountability, you're more likely to follow through.

Step 3: Know your weakness

We all have bad days. Knowing ahead of time what could make you slip up will help you better deal with those problems when they come. Take a moment to think of any reasons you would want to give up on your resolutions... no one is supporting you, you tire out or get bored easily, you don't have the time, etc. Be wary of these potential excuses as time goes on, and have back-up plans in case things do go awry.

Step 4: Find out what motivates you

Additionally, knowing what makes you stronger will also be beneficial as the year goes on. You could form a support group to give you encouragement and accountability. You could take a day to get away and recharge your batteries. You could write down your favorite motivational quotes, sayings, verses, etc. Or, you could even compile all of your favorite songs in to a playlist for extra encouragement. The possibilities are endless, and individual to you. Identify your motivation so that when you have a rough day and feel like quitting, you know how to move on.

Step 5: Take 5

Once you're all set and prepared, it'll be time to actually start achieving your goals. Stick with your specific plan, but try to incorporate it into a "take 5" schedule. This is the simplest and easiest way to ensure that you are consistently working on your goals. All you have to do is set aside 5 minutes of your time each day to dedicate toward your resolution. This may not seem like much at first, but as the year drags on, those 5 minutes will become your lifeline to maintaining your resolutions. On good days, you'll find yourself wanting to surpass these initial 5 minutes... and all the power to you! On some not-so-good days, however, you'll be grateful that at least you got in 5 minutes and didn't abandon your resolution completely.

I hope that you found some of these tips beneficial toward your resolution(s). Please let me know if you have any questions regarding these ideas, would like more information, or have any corrections to report/ideas of your own to submit!
