Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Allan Joseph Bombard was born on July 18 1922, in Brushton, New York. Brushton is a small country town nestled in the Adirondack Mountains near the Canadian border. Allan lived there with his mother, Leona, his father, Theodore, and his brother George. Allan’s father was of French, Canadian, and Mohawk descent. His mother was of Scottish, French and Canadian descent.
Allan’s father was a carpenter, had a small farm of cows, chickens and vegetables and kept bees. His mother made all of the clothes and made beautiful quilts. She also made honey, jams, canned vegetables and soaps from what was grown on the land.
Allan’s grandfather, Julius, was born in French Canada (Quebec). He fought in the Civil War.
One interesting note about Allan is that in his baby book, his mother calls him “baby” until he is about two. His mother says that “baby is very happy and very smart.”
One funny story is when Leona went to visit her sister in Framingham, Massachusetts for the weekend. She left “baby” home with his father to take care of him. This was in the day of cloth diapers, and not disposable ones. Joseph did not know how to do laundry, so, when Leona returned home, all of the dirty clothes were in a basket and baby Allan was in a pillowcase!
