Chapter 2

"You idiots!!!!" I screamed, slamming my fist onto the table in front of me and breaking it in half. Damn it. The Demons before my whined and took steps back. They knew how evil I could be in a cold rage. I looked up, my liquid black eyes scanning their pathetic faces. "I told you to do *one * simple thing, and you screw it up! You just had to get the boy! He was unconscious! How easy could it get?!" I shouted, making them all whimper. One of them started to cry, but then again he was the youngest of them all here. My warriors. More like, my pansies. Pathetic I tell you.

"T..the siblings... t...they were near the b...boy... we couldn't..."

"So kill them! Kill them all if you have to! Just get me that boy!" I screamed, waving my hand out and sending them all flying off of my balcony. I heard the flapping of wings as they all soared far away from me. "Good riddance, you filthy insects..." I mumbled to myself. Why couldn't you get good Demons these days? But you know what they say. If you want something done, you have to do it yourself. And kidnapping was one of my favorite things to do. I opened my wings and jumped into the night.

I stirred the huge pot, inhaling the delicious aromas from the stew that I was almost done making for my family. The twins, Ashley and Alice, were on the floor fighting over one of their many toys. I groaned and walked over, breaking them apart. "Stop little ones, stop!" I said, giving them both a glare. The both made pouting faces and fell tot he floor, arms crossed. They looked like tiny versions of myself, short brown hair and, of course, Demon eyes.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of coming into our house. I looked up to see my older brother Tristen throwing his sword onto the floor. He was three years older than me, and he was leader of our 'family'. Our parents had died five years ago, when I was just a teenager. Neither of is know how they came to die, but ever since then Tristen and I have been running this home. Lord Demetri has been kind enough to let us live here without taxes. In return, the twins let him 'use' them. You see, my little sisters have strong powers from ones so young. They see what is to come. Every month Tristen and I take them up to the castle, where Lord Demetri gets to see what Ashley and Alice have seen. It brings happiness to me, to see such joy in our lord's eyes.

"Kendra, come check on the stew." Tristen said, his voice hard. I looked over at Ashley and Alice, who had resumed bouncing and squealing on the couch. Tristen only used that voice when he wanted to talk in private. I walked into the kitchen and pretended to be very interested in our dinner.

"What is it Tristen? Did you have a bad day?" I asked. He sighed and put his head in his hands.

"We didn't get the boy. Lord Demetri was furious." He said, groaning. I bit my lip. Demetri could be a little harsh, and you definitely didn't want to see him in a rage.

"But he wasn't mad at you directly was he?" I asked, praying that the answer would be no. Tristen shook his head and I breathed a sigh of relief. I looked over my shoulder at the twins. "Ashley, Alice, dinner is ready. Come and eat." They both scampered to the table and sat down, ready to dig in. Tristen sat at the head of the table, where father used to sit. I brought the huge pot over and ladled a good bowl-full of stew into everybody's bowl. I sat down at the other end of the table, where mother used to sit. Ashley stuck her tongue out.

"What's in this Kendra?" She asked, poking a piece of meat with her spoon.

"Beef." I said, taking a big spoonful. She looked at the stew in disgust.

"It looks like someone's barf." She said, giggling.

"Look at the chunks!" Alice chirped. They both erupted into a fit of laughter and Tristen and I smiled. I didn't mind that they thought my cooking was horrid, I just wanted them to be happy. Tristen took Ashley's spoon and picked up some stew.

"Hey Ash." He said, getting her attention. "What letter comes after 'n'?" She rolled her eyes at him.

"Duh silly, its 'o'..." As she said the letter, Tristen pushed the spoon into her mouth. Alice giggled as her sister's face turned from rage, to confusion, to joy. When Ashley had swallowed, she grinned at me.

"It's good Kendra, it's good!" She said, gesturing for Alice to try some. Alice stared at her bowl, then reluctantly sipped from soup. She grinned and nodded at me.

"Really good Kendra!" She said. Ashley and Alice shoveled spoonful after spoonful of stew into their tiny mouths as Tristen and I grinned at each other from across the table. When dinner was done, I herded the twins into their rooms. When they were settled into bed, I gave them each a kiss on the forehead and closed the door quietly. Silently walking to my room, I was suddenly picked up and spun around. I giggled quietly and Tristen set me down.

"You are wonderful Kendra. Without you, we would be eating our own socks for dinner." He said. I rolled her eyes at him and smiled.

"That would still be better than your cooking." I said, making him grin. He leaned down and kissed me on the cheek, heading to his room.

"Goodnight Kendra. Sweet dreams." He said.

"Goodnight Tristen." I muttered, closing my bedroom door behind me. I slipped into my pajamas and settled into bed. My pillow was soft, thanks to Lord Demetri, and my comforter was warm, also thank to Lord Demetri. He had always been so kind to us, and it was a pity that he had gotten frustrated today at Tristen and the other Demons who had been assigned to kidnap the boy. What was so special about him anyway? Never mind, I thought to myself. I don't care either way. I dozed off, dreaming of a day when I would see my parents again.
