Top twenty severus snape quotes

This was supposed to be a "top ten," but Sevi is just so awesome that I had more than ten quotes... So, without further ado...

Chapter 1

20. "Just the man. The very man. A girl has been snatched by the monster, Lockhart. Taken into the Chamber of Secrets itself. Your moment has come at last."
Ah, how very Snapey. Sarcastic, and mean, and Lockhart deserved it, too. And the other teachers reactions (join in the Lockhart-mocking fest) shatters Harry's little assumption that no one likes Snape. Harry's so narrow-minded.

19. "Have you seen Harry Potter, Minerva? Because if you have, I must insist--"
For context, this is from the end of Deathly Hallows, just before the Snape/McGonagall duel. It would seem that Snapey-dear is trying to get Minerva to give Harry up to the Dark Lord, but really it's likely that he's noticed that Voldemort fears for the life of his snake, and Harry must know of his status as a Horcrux. For those of you that didn't believe in Sev all the time, this line would have sounded very different when rereading than it did the first time. And, that, my friends, is the wonder of Snape.

18. "Avada Kedavra!"
He killed Dumbledore. With those words. Kinda important.

17. "And my soul, Dumbledore? Mine?"
Why does Dumbledore care so little about Snape? He wants him to murder him, to spy for him, etc, and he just... doesn't care about his poor little soul.

16. "Do not say the Dark Lord's name!"
Oh... Snape and Voldy still have some unresolved issues. Snape should've gotten to kill You-Know-Who.

15. "I thought... you were going... to keep her... safe..."
This line is just so, so heartbreaking. Poor Snape.

14. "I wish... I wish I were dead..."
Even more heartbreaking than the last.

13. "I have no idea. Potter, when I want nonsense shouted at me I shall give you a Babbling Beverage. And Crabbe, loosen your hold a little, if Longbottom suffocates it will mean a lot of tedious paperwork, and I am afraid I shall have to mention it on you reference if ever you apply for a job."
Yes! He flawlessly deflects Umbridge's question, and subtly insults Crabbe in the same breath. Now this is Snape.

12. "Why, yes, I suppose I am."
This is in response to Sirius's question, "Are you calling me a coward?" So silky and Snape-like to insult him so.

11. "Get up! Get up! You are not trying, you are allowing me access to memories you fear, you are handing me weapons!"
That is called Snape trying to pretend he doesn't care about Harry, folks.

10. "Vengeance is very sweet."
Spoken in the Shrieking Shack in Prisoner of Azkaban. Many thought that "vengeance" was only for childhood cruelty, but really it was for the death of Lily Potter, which, of course, was thought to be Sirius Black's fault.

9. "In-- in return? Anything."
For the safety of Lily, anything includes death. And murder, as it happens.

8. "Would you like me to do it now? Or would you like a few moments to compose an epitaph?"
Heh. Snape hiding his feelings in sarcasm. He does that a lot.

7. "It's obvious, isn't it?"
The first words spoken by a young Severus to a young Lily.

He's just done the least cowardly thing possible, and here Harry is being a git.

5. "Do not use that word!"
In response to Phineas Nigellus's use of "Mudblood." I'm thinking Snape is regretting his use of it toward Lily.

4. "I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!"
This line quite probably started the entire plotline of the series. Think: if he hadn't said it, they would have stayed friends. Sev would've been persuaded by Lily to drop his little Death Eater friends, and possibly even married her. That means no Boy Who Lived.

3. "For him? Expecto Patronum!"
And the silver doe appears.

2. "Look... at... me..."
Snape's last words. Telling, isn't it, that his last act is to look into Harry's green eyes-- oh so much like Lily's.

1. "Always."
I cry.
