It's not a deal breaker if they don't give gifts but it means a lot if they do. It shows thought about a person and their interests, especially an occasional random gift because then it doesn't seem like it was bought/made out of obligation for a holiday. It comes down to the originality of a gift; home made is great and store bought things are fine if they aren't the usual jewelry/chocolate/etc.
But occasional means occasional. Giving too often seems like trying to buy someone.
On holidays and special days of the year, yeah gifts are nice, but they don't have to be store bought. Like a gift could be handmade, or a trip somewhere.
I think it really doesn't matter at all. Like maybe if it's a holiday, or their birthday then I would, but just randomly, no. And even if it is, I would make them something. After all, it is the thought that counts. If you spend time making something and don't just go to the store, hand over money for the item and be done with it, then it shows that you care.
