Chapter 1

Lost and Tired

Lost. Lost. the word swirled through my mind, over and over. I looked around. No familiarity.
I felt scared. It's dark in these woods, and I didn't know where to go. Brandt's last words to me dominated my mind.

"You need to get out of here as fast as possible. Don't stop, don't think. Don't sleep. Don't let them catch you. Don't talk to anyone, and most important; stay hidden."

I shivered. It was getting cold. I felt so tired. I wished I could sleep. But I knew that if I wanted to survive, I should keep moving, no matter what. I glanced around. It was getting lighter. I estimated that I'd been walking for over 2 days now. It was only thanks to my endurance that I hadn't fainted yet.
By now, I wasn't even walking anymore. I was stumbling, and my stomach growled. I grabbed my backpack from my shoulder and I ripped it open. I chose a simple sandwich, even though my stomach was screaming for more.
I kept walking while I ate, jumping at every sound. I counted every second to keep my mind off things, but it didn't work. I realized I didn't even know where I was going. I also realized Brandt didn't tell me where to go either.
I tried to think of a place I could go to, but all I could think of are places where they'd easily find me. I knew they'd catch me eventually. But I wouldn't go without a fight.
I suddenly felt a surge of energy, and I started to run. I won't let them, I thought determined.
I flashed through the trees, ignoring all the animals that jump aside yelping. Adrenaline rushed through me. I laughed wildly. I loved running without thought. Not that I was still able to think normally anymore. I was probably half-insane because of the lack of sleep I'd had.
In mid-sprint I dropped down, exhausted, my laughter abruptly coming to an end. I was broken.
I panted, and I leaned back against a tree. Surely I was far enough now. Surely they wouldn't find me here..Surely I could rest just a little bit, and maybe I could close my eyes a little...Just a bit, I wouldn't fall asleep..

My eyes drooped.
